What is RSS?
RSS is ‘Really Simple Syndication’. It allows visitors to your blog to have your posts sent to them automatically with a method of their choosing, instead of having to come to your web page each day to look for an update. This can be helpful if someone follows several blogs as they can use the RSS reader tool to look at all the blogs in just one place.
Each blog publishes a unique URL which is the RSS feed and this is what your visitors will need to subscribe to your blog using RSS. The good news is that all of the blog platforms including WordPress all have the RSS technology built in so there is very little for you to do. In fact, if you have chosen your theme well then the chances are that you have nothing to do at all.
What you need to look out for is that the RSS icon is displayed prominently in the upper section of your blog theme. If your visitor has to scroll down to find it, use a different one. Ensure that the icon is relatively big and stands out. Basically, you need to make sure that it will draw the visitor’s eye straight to it. If it’s out of sight, it’s unlikely that it will be used.
Full or Partial Feeds – Which to Choose?
RSS has a feature that allows just a snippet of your post to be published to your RSS feed and if a reader wants to read the full entry then they must click through to your website to continue reading. By default, WordPress is setup to publish full feeds which means that your entire post is published to the feed. To check what setting you are on, from your WordPress Dashboard click on ‘Settings’ and then ‘Reading’.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods. If you provide a full text feed it means that your reader doesn’t ever need to visit your website again – they can get all of your material directly through their feed reader. Some webmasters don’t like this because it means that those people won’t see their ads that they have on their site. However, all that has changed now as Google has setup a system to allow ads to be embedded directly in your feed.
The thing to realise about RSS users, is that these people understand the internet. They know all about RSS, have already chosen their RSS reader and they chose to subscribe to your feed as they want to read what you have to say. There is much less chance of these people clicking on an ad than someone who came to your website via a search engine. These are people who are hungry for information, that is why they use RSS in the first place.
Using an RSS reader allows them to read all their chosen blogs nice and quickly without having to navigate around a bunch of websites. If you make your RSS feed partial in order to force the reader to click through to your site, you are likely to find that many of your readers simply don’t bother to click and may even unsubscribe. In other words – your content does not get read.
My recommendation is that if you are growing a social blog where you want to build up an audience of loyal readers who read every word you say then make the feed full. If you are creating a commercial blog which is heavily monetized and you are not so bothered about readership then make it a partial feed.
However, the best revenue from your blog does not come from on-page ads! When you learn to use your blog to launch much bigger revenue streams then it doesn’t matter if people read your content through your RSS feed or your webpage so for nearly all cases I would recommend a full feed.
How To Use Feedburner
If you are using the default WordPress theme then you don’t need to do anything in order for your viewers to be able to subscribe to your feed. This would mean, however, that you would not be able to see your subscription numbers. If you want to know how many people are subscribing to your feed then you can use the Feedburner service to track this.
Feedburner is a completely free service which is run by Google and it is extremely easy to setup. Once you have signed up all you need to do is to give Feedburner the URL of your original blog feed and it will create a new Feedburner URL for you. Then you edit your WordPress theme to use this URL instead.
Google Analytics – What is it?
Google Analytics is a nice piece of software that allows you to track all kinds of stats about your website such as how much traffic you have had, what keywords are used to find you, other links that point to you, the location of your visitors and a lot more. It’s damn good software and it’s completely free!
Once you have signed up you will need to add a website profile for your blog. All you need to do here is put in the URL of your blog and perhaps set your time zone if you want. You will then be shown some code that you need to display on your pages – just click on the code to copy it to the clipboard.
To put the code onto your WordPress blog, you can do it manually but that involves editing your theme files and if you change themes you will have to do it again. Instead, I recommend Semiologic which manages your Analytics for you. The download page has full instructions on how to use the plugin so I don’t need to repeat it here.

The Top Paid-to-Write Sites On The Internet

The paid-to-write phenomena is taking the internet by storm. In the following paragraphs, the reader will find the three most popular websites and rough guidelines on their pay structure.
Probably the most popular site on the Internet is Associated Content. Associated Content gives a solid upfront payment. The site states that it will pay anywhere from $1-$20, but my experience has been that most of my articles earn about $3. One way to increase upfront payment is to give Associated Content exclusive rights to the article, but this only increases the upfront payment by a marginal amount (about 50 cents or so).
Besides paying upfront, Associated Content also pays based on pageviews for each article. Associated Content does an excellent job of accepting articles without running the writer around in too many circles before finally accepting the writer’s articles (more on this later). Overall, Associated Content is an excellent place for a beginning writer to make some nice pocket cash, and if his or her articles become popular, it is possible to make hundreds or a few thousand dollars over the course of a few years.
Helium is the next site where writers can earn an upfront payment. Helium, overall, does not pay quite as well as Associated Content, however, that does not mean it is not lucrative. Helium creates an interesting “star system” that pays writers increasingly as they gain writing stars.
Stars are gained by writing more articles and receiving higher ratings on articles. The upfront payment is 50 cents per star, up to a maximum of $2.50 for 5 stars. Helium also pays by the page view, much like Associated Content. Besides this, Helium runs regular contests and will also pay users better for being the first to write on an article title, or for publishing their first article within a week of signing up. Helium also features a marketplace where users can sell articles to prospective purchasers, although this can be quite competitive. Helium is a little more fussy than Associated Content when it comes to accepting articles. It looks to have each article to be “magazine quality,” and will delete an article if it has one misspelling. This seems to be a reasonable standard, however. Because of Helium’s competitive atmosphere, writers will find that they develop stronger writing skills and gain greater exposure among prospective employers. Overall, Helium is a good use of time and can result in a long-term decent amount of cash.
The final site is Constant Content. Constant Content is much different from the previous two sites in that it does not offer any upfront payment, nor does it pay by the page view. Rather, it acts as a meeting place for those wanting to buy content and writers wanting to sell content. Constant has even higher standards than Helium, but it can also pay quite well.
It may take a few rejections for each article before the article is finally accepted. Article prices vary by the number of words in each article. Articles sold for usage rights (where the purchaser simply reuses the article but does not have rights to it) can pull a good twenty to fifty dollars. Articles sold for full rights (where the purchaser owns all rights to the article) can sell for well over one hundred dollars. However, the catch is that the writer’s articles may or may not sell. If there is good demand for the writer’s work, the writer can make a few hundred dollars; if there is little demand, the writer will not make as much. Constant Content is probably best for those who have an above average writing skill.
Overall, there is good opportunity for various authors to make some nice pocket cash on the internet, and these sites are by far the top three. Most other sites will require the author to write about things he or she does not want to write about (usually the case with paid blogging), while others that do let the author write about what he or she wants usually pay through Google Adsense, which usually only amounts to a few pennies each month.
