I’m pretty sure you’re sick of folks like me telling you that content is king and that you must produce reams of it in order to compete these days, so I won’t put you through any more of that kind of silly talk.

What I will say is that people today have come to expect to find information about any product, service, company, individual, cause or challenge they face by simply turning to the search engine of their choice. So, if they’re not finding content that you’ve produced that provides them that information, even if someone referred them directly to you, there’s a pretty good chance you won’t be worthy of their trust.

I guess I am going to tell you that you’ve got to commit to content production, but you’ve got to make it a part of your overall strategy and you’ve got to produce content with an eye on doing two things – educating and building trust.

These two categories of your content strategy must be delivered through the creation of very specific forms of content and not simply through sheer volume. Every business is now a publishing business, so you’ve got to start to think like one.

Content that builds trust

  • Blog – Yes, I think a blog is the absolute starting point for your content strategy because it makes content production, syndication and sharing so easy. The search engines love blog content as well, and this is the place where you can organize a great deal of your editorial thinking. Content produced on a blog can easily be expanded and adapted to become content for articles, workshops, and ebooks.
  • Social media – The first step in the social media content game is to claim all the free opportunities to create social media profiles on sites like LinkedIn and Facebook, but also in Business Week, Entrepreneur and Inc magazine communities. Building rich profiles, and optimizing links, images and videos that point back to your main site is an important part of the content as strategy play.
  • Reviews – Ratings and reviews sites such as Yelp!, MerchantCircle and CitySearch have become mainstream user-generated content hubs. Throw in the fact that Google, Yahoo and Bing all allow folks to rate and review businesses and you’ve got an increasingly important category of content that you must participate in. You’ll never have total control over this category, but ignore it and it may be one of the most damaging to your brand. Get proactive and monitor this channel aggressively.
  • Testimonials – Customer testimonials are a powerful form of content. Every business today should seek customer content in multiple forms – written, audio and video. This content adds important trust building endorsements and makes for great brand building assets out there on Google and YouTube.

Content that educates

  • The Point of View White Paper – Every business should have a well-developed core story that’s documented in the form of a white paper of eBook. This content must dive deeply into what makes your firm different, what your secret sauce is, how you approach customer service, and why you do what you do. I wrote extensively about this idea in The Referral Engine. This is the primer for your educational content push.
  • Seminars – Today, people want information packaged in ways that will help them get what they want. Presentations, workshop and seminars (online and off) are tremendous ways to provide education with the added punch of engagement. Turning your point of view white paper into a 45-minute value-packed session is one of the most effective ways to generate, nurture, and convert leads.
  • FAQs – There are those that want to know one very specific thing about your company or approach and these learners get the most value out of the traditional frequently asked questions approach. There’s no denying the value of information packaged in this format, but go beyond the questions that routinely get asked and include those that should get asked but don’t. Particularly the ones that help position you favorably against your competition.
  • Success stories – Building rich examples of actual clients succeeding through the use of your product or service offerings is a tremendous way to help people learn from other individuals and business just like them. When prospects see themselves in a success story we can more easily transport them to a place where they can imagine getting those same results. This is another form of content that begs to be produced in video.

All of the above elements should be built into your marketing plan with a process to create, update and curate each.

So the question is whats the real deal with search engine optimization. When you are looking into search Engine Optimization for your company or personal website you are going to have a hard time figuring out what the facts are. You may have heard that theres lots of dangerous opinions and incorrect advice out there. I have come to an interesting conclusion at the end of my SEO search and that is, it really does not matter that much.

That is not to say that everyone in the world knows what they are talking about. Just that the importance of each particular ranking factor is a lot smaller than people think. And there is good reason for that. Google has taken into account a huge number of ranking factors, and when somebody discovers one and it utilizes it to its full potential, in some cases it can make a measurable difference.

So what happens is thousands exploit a particular characteristic of the ranking system, and suddenly it becomes less effective. This is not a big surprise. So if you hear somebody suggest that one technique reins supreme, you can consider that at some point there was probably a grain of truth in it. In fact it probably worked very well for somebody at some point in time.

While doing my keyword research I stumbled across a company that did an extensive background analysis on the internet and decided which factors were important and to what extent they were important. They came to an amazing conclusion.

The ranking factors were different for each market, and even each keyword!

Hows that for a confusing result. Each keyword has its own unique ranking factors. As a marketing SEO consultant myself, I found this both amazing and in hindsight, logical. After all I can understand that ranking well for the term “Internet Marketing” is going to be a different process than ranking well for the word “thumbtack”. So if you are going for the key phrase “ Thumbtacks in San Antonio, Texas”, about the only problem with ranking well for that is getting it down on the page. In fact you can likely Google that exact phrase “Thumbtacks in San Antonio, Texas” and Ill bet just by saying it a second time I have sealed my position for that key phrase. Naturally the ranking factors for that are going to be different than for a highly competitive phrase.

But lets get back to content business. Healthy SEO Optimization means fully informing your visitors on the topic that theyre searching for. When you do cover all the topics for your keyword or your keyword phrase then you will accomplish both tasks of informing your visitors properly, and making the search engines happy too. Whats interesting is that the search engines are only as smart as whats already been published already on sites or in articles. You may have heard of something called latent semantic indexing. Lets cut that down to semantic indexing. This means the index is created based on the semantics of the language used.

I wrote up an example for a client of mine the other day and told him that LOG CABINS ROCK and I told him if those are the only three words you find on a page, its never going to rank well for LOG CABINS. The main reason is that the word rock is not a typical descriptor for the phrase log cabins. I think you can see that the page with those three words on it, is going to have a hard time when Google tries to place it in the search results. This would be a prime example of a page without LSI keywords in place.

So when that phrase LATENT SEMANTIC INDEXING comes up again, think about “Log cabins rock!” at how Google is going to have a hard time understanding what that page is about. If you are going to create a page on log cabins one should be mentioning Cedar, Redwood, bark, trees, forests, or whatever words you would normally use to describe a log cabin home. You can go about this research in a number of ways, the simplest being typed in log cabin into your search, and check out the topics covered on the top ranking pages. If you think they are appropriate put them on your page. Not the exact words, I mean cover those topics and cover them with as much depth as you know about the topic.

Believe it or not that brings us right back to effective SEO services. I have access to software that examines over 100,000 pages of information on at least 200 topics and examines over a thousand possible ranking factors and determines which ones seem to be showing the best correlation between them being there and showing up well on the top 10 rankings. So now it all boils down to this… the results are in…

If you write up some more on-topic information and put it on your website, it will rank better.

Thats it. The biggest factor turned out to be adding more unique content to your website thats on-topic. So you might wonder why Im still in business as an SEO consultant. Probably the best reason is, people are shy and dont like to write.

A procedure should always be written down in recorded some way or another. On paper, or in a video, as long as it exists somewhere besides in your head. It should be in a step-by-step like guide so it can be accomplished by anyone whether that be your employees or the future owner of your company.

Many businesses don\’t know about procedures, maybe that\’s why so many fail? So before you think creating them will waste your time, think about how long you\’d like your business to last. Forever would be nice. Anything you do, walking across the office in 15 steps to the printer, chatting to a client, sending a fax, can all be made into procedures, believe it or not. It will benefit not only others, but will benefit yourself. You might find that following the same procedure to the tee will make work easier.

You won\’t accidentally miss that important step if you\’re following a procedure. You\’ll also find that with steps, some might not be so necessary. Removing waste can save hours of time otherwise being wasted.

Do yourself a favor and train yourself to spot areas where time is leaking. If the fax takes too long, maybe step X should require an e-mail? Improving and making modification to procedures is just as important as having them. Once they are the structure of your business, changing the procedures is making a change to your business.

I then revised it in order to eliminate time which would otherwise have been wasted:

1. Make video course 2. Add video course to cd-rom 3. Send cd-rom data to cd manufacturing service 4. Send order link to customers

The first procedure is for a downloadable product, the second is a cd-rom product. Even though the cd product can\’t be played by a customer immediately after ordering, the number of sales weren\’t affected, and wasted time in many areas was eliminated.

A. Your SEO Marketing Strategy should target the market you are seeking. Most people do not take the time to find out where their market is. They are sometimes part of their market, or they “Know” the market. But WHERE is their market…..actually? “I use live bait and most everyone I know does too!” or “I tie my own fishing flies and so does everyone I know!”

Do you see a pattern here? Everyone sees things from their own perspective and their own micro-micro-niche. This is not always where the money is. So do some research and ignore the people who advise you to work from your own perspective. What you like may be the coolest market there is. But maybe instead of building a website for that market, you can start a forum where all 15 of you can hang out and chat.

Your SEO marketing strategy, on the other hand should focus on the much larger part of the market than your own clan can support. Look for some decent numbers. Use a strategy that the search engines appreciate, stick with popular markets. The search engines do not change for people who post a lot of content that the population is searching for. Usually their ranking is unaffected. It is only the “thin” websites that suffer because they have no buffer to work with. Their marketing strategy is to get by with as little content as possible. Whoops… That is for topic C.

B. Your SEO Marketing Strategy should include the most competitive words in your market. That does not mean that are the only words you would like to rank for, but I will let you in on a secret. There are a ton of long tail searches that are missed because people try to keep the content to a minimum. The Best SEO Marketing Strategy has ZERO competition on the internet.

True, the number of exact searches may be low, but I hope you catch my drift. You can rank at the #1 spot for a lot of the most popular keywords by doing a lot of writing on the subject that others refuse to do. Look at this result: Results of about 713 for Where can I find an ipod? Can you beat out 700 sites for this keyword phrase? I think so.

C. Your SEO Marketing Strategy should be to create as much content on your subject as possible. Better yet, invite input from visitors. How many Videos has YouTube created? ZERO as far as I can tell. Every bit of the site is user added content. Do users have the same opinions as you on your subject? Maybe not. Swallow hard and suck it up.

Your mission is to make the visitor happy in your own style. But stay out of the way if they want to change the topic. Add lot of your own input, but let visitors have a hand in your success too. Both methods of content creation result in links coming it. Incoming links make up about 2/3 of your overall SEO Marketing Strategy success.

An SEO marketing company would like you to know that they can DO IT ALL – Large And Small. I do not see that happening. I think they try something and wait and see if it works. About 3 months to a year later they find out they did good and they work that magic on their clients. But what if the knowledge is out there about how to build a good ranking website, and they are busy with customers and miss the boat?

I see that happening. I know one true SEO expert that skips over the practical applications and just teaches Googles PhD level insights. Lord knows there are enough PhDs there to learn from. But what about “rubber meeting road?” If something works, it should be followed. You dont see any adsense on this site.

And it seems to be doing OK. Is there a connection between ranking and having adsense on your website?

What should be the primary focus of SEO Marketing? Getting a site to show well in searches. “Short Tail” are the most common and popular searches and “Long Tail” are the less popular searches.

People seem to forget….they BOTH need to rank well in order to be found. Ranking well for keywords is the main and only thing. Conversion of traffic to customers is a whole nother specialty. Seek out a “Conversion Expert” for that. There is a new breed of “Low Key” conversion experts out there.

Your sick of “Hype” and so is every consumer out there. Play it cool and see the benefits for yourself. But for crying out loud, FIND somebody who knows how to build a good ranking website for you. Thats a good starting place.
